4 WAYS TO PLACE YOUR SOFA IN THE LIVING ROOM

DISCOVER NEW FURNISHING POSSIBILITIES

There are several ways to think about furnishing, especially sofa placement. Although the placement of the sofa may seem obvious, sometimes you need new perspectives to see more possibilities.

WHERE SHOULD THE SOFA BE PLACED IN THE LIVING ROOM?

Start by considering the type of sofa you have or plan to purchase. What will you use the sofa for? What is the purpose of the sofa? Do you want to place the sofa in front of a TV or create a more social space where conversations are the focus? If you're unsure which sofa to choose, we help you find the right sofa model through our comprehensive sofa guide.

Consider the light entry in the room and try to place the sofa so that the light comes into the home instead of having it with its back to the window, creating a large shadow.

Think about placing the sofa so that you can easily move between entrances like the kitchen, bedroom, and other parts of the home. A rule of thumb is to leave 90 cm around the sofa free to entrances so that the room still feels airy.

We list four different ways to place one or more sofas in the living room – we share tips and tricks to achieve a stylish and functional arrangement.

1. INVITING FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT WITH THE SOFA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM

A good tip for those living in a slightly smaller apartment is to dare to place the sofa in the middle of the room. It gives a completely new sense of space and more walls to use, for example, for storage. To make the sofa and the room more inviting, we recommend placing a low bookshelf or a console table against the back of the sofa, which you can decorate with details such as a lamp or a plant.

A sofa in the middle of the room also works very well as a divider, allowing you to section off the room more easily. A living room with more space and sections also provides room for a dining area with a table and chairs. Alternatively, a workspace where you can fit a desk and a comfortable chair, as you are not taking up any walls with the sofa.

2. CLASSIC FURNISHING WITH STRAIGHT SOFAS

The most common furnishing and the most common sofas are straight 2- and 3-seater sofas, which are usually placed with the sofa back against a wall with a coffee table in front. A classic furnishing that becomes even better if you let the sofa come out about 8-12 cm from the wall, instead of having the sofa against the wall. This creates a wonderful sense of space in the room. Complete the furnishing with a lovely rug that frames the sofa and the coffee table.

This type of furnishing also works excellently for chaise longue or sectional sofas. If you want to create a more relaxed feeling with classic straight sofas, you can complement the sofa with a footstool to achieve the same soft feeling as with a chaise longue sofa where you can put your feet up and relax to the fullest.

3. SOCIAL FURNISHING WITH TWO SOFAS FACING EACH OTHER

Create a lovely social space by placing two sofas facing each other with a coffee table in the middle. Having two sofas facing each other creates a luxurious and elegant feel. In an elongated room, it is important to easily move around the sofas so the room does not feel cramped. Place the sofas in harmony with the room's shape and create a balanced flow where the furniture harmonizes with the room.

In a square room, we recommend placing the backs of the sofas against the walls, of course, with space from the walls to avoid the sofas feeling pressed in. This is an optimal furnishing for a room that can feel wide. An elegant and luxurious furnishing that fits perfectly in a room with a fireplace or if you have a TV on the wall.

If you feel that it becomes too much or too cramped in the room with two sofas, but still want to create an inviting and social area, a sofa together with two armchairs is also a good option. This furnishing looks nice with a straight sofa, but also with a chaise longue sofa. The most important thing is that it still feels spacious and inviting.

4. CREATE AN INVITING CORNER WITH MULTIPLE SOFAS

In a room where you want to invite conversation while still having a good view when watching TV, an L-shaped arrangement is an excellent choice. If you have two sofas arranged in an L, it becomes a natural spot in the corner for a small side table where you can place a lamp or another detail that also serves as a resting surface for your morning cup.

An L-shaped arrangement gives a very inviting feel whether you place the sofas along the walls of the room or use one of the sofas as a divider. If you have a dedicated living room where the sofas should be the focus, the most inviting and airy option is to place the sofas against the wall. However, if you have an open floor plan and want to partition off, it is often a better option to place one of the sofas in the middle of the room and make the back more welcoming with a console table.

This type of arrangement can be recreated with modular sofas that you can easily separate and arrange as you wish. The straight sofas can also be replaced with a corner sofa that also creates the same effect of an inviting corner. Corner sofas can also be turned with the back out into the room to create a nice partition.
